LAURA TATE, AUSTRALIA
OVERVIEW

Laura Tate is an artist who seeks to kindle the imagination and illuminate the joy of the everyday. While her playful sculptures and whimsical assemblages might initially confound or confuse, they often just make us laugh. Fashioned mostly from found objects and figures, Tate ‘s work explores unlikely relationships with a sense of the absurd while simultaneously revealing her deep affinity with shape and colour.

Tate’s wide-ranging art education began with a Bachelor of Fine Arts from UNSW where she majored in textiles. She subsequently studied drawing, photography and other visual arts under the tutelage of well-known Italian abstract expressionist painter Nicholas Carone who, she says, “showed me how to look at paintings”. After moving to the Northern Rivers and attending Byron School of Art, Tate fell into sculpture – now the focus of her current practice.
